Start off with few layers, its better to add them if you're cold than to take them off AFTER you're sweaty and getting a chill.

Im from Minnesota and live in S.D. Sometime in Iraq round 2009 some poor soldier left a whole sleep system in the tent that was becoming my battalions new home. He went stateside and I attempted to contact his but no clue who lost it. So I have a whole sleep system not on my inventory record- $$$Cha Ching baby$$$ If you use all layers and a PT/Sleeping mat. You can sleep through the worse and be dry. But they arn't cheap unless you are in the military and get lucky or you are "That guy."

I use to be in the military and use these systems. They are sweet but kind suck if your going on long hikes. A bit heavy compared to other systems. If you know anyone looking to get one i found them used on amazon down to 50.00. For that price i may buy one.
